Safety is paramount when it comes to firefighting, and that’s where SCBA gear plays a vital role. SCBA is an acronym for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, and it’s a mask that looks like something out of a superhero movie that firefighters don when they need to breathe clean air in smoky or hazardous environments.
All SCBA gear must meet the standards outlined in NFPA 1981 standard and recertified after service to ensure they will perform when you need them. It’s sort of a rule book everyone has to adhere to in order to ensure that the equipment is both reliable and safe.
But that’s not all! SCBA apparatus must also meet guidelines set by other agencies, such as OSHA. These are like extra safety rules that keep the firefighters safe and ensure their gear works perfectly.
Accordingly, every time SCBA equipment is bought, it must meet the NFPA 1981 standard in place at that moment. And oh: It should also comply with the rules and regulations as stipulated by other agencies to guarantee full safety and performance.
By playing by these rules and standards, we can have confidence that our firefighters are equipped with the best possible gear to bravely stand up against the actions of their heroic line of work!”
How do we do it?
It’s important that we routinely inspect our SCBA equipment to ensure it is ready for action—and protecting our firefighters. Here’s how we do it:
After Each Use:
Following each use, the SCBA is checked by its user to determine if the cylinder needs recharging or exchanging for a listed fully charged one. We clean the components and face pieces, inspect for damage or wear, and sanitize. If contaminated we decon it before reuse in the SCBA.
Monthly Inspection:
Each apparatus-assigned SCBA gets a monthly inspection. We make certain it’s charged, clean, in good working order.” If there’s a small task, like decontaminating the cylinder or refilling it, anyone with training on our SCBAs could perform it. Any Damage? If there is any damage, or a unit is not operating correctly during an inspection process we remove it from service and label it with what was wrong. We let the SCBA maintenance guys know about those, so they can address that.
Annual Checkup:
Each year, all SCBAs receive a complete inspection and overhaul by an approved repair facility. They break down and clean the parts, swap out worn pieces and test the SCBA to ensure everything works properly. Its function is tested with a flow test.
