Staying safe during firefighting is crucial, and that’s where SCBA equipment comes into play. SCBA stands for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, and it’s like a superhero’s mask that firefighters wear to breathe clean air in smoky and hazardous environments.
To ensure top-notch performance, all SCBA equipment must meet the rules set by the NFPA 1981 standard and recertified after maintenance. It’s like a set of rules that everyone has to follow to make sure the equipment is reliable and safe.
But that’s not all! SCBA equipment must also follow the guidelines from other agencies, like OSHA. These are like extra safety rules that keep the firefighters protected and make sure their gear works perfectly.
So, whenever SCBA equipment is purchased, it must comply with the NFPA 1981 standard that was in effect at that time. And on top of that, it should also meet the rules and regulations set by other agencies to ensure ultimate safety and performance.
By following these rules and standards, we can trust that our firefighters have the best gear possible to bravely face the challenges of their heroic duties!
How do we do it?
Checking our SCBA equipment regularly is essential to make sure it’s ready for action and keeping our firefighters safe. Here’s how we do it:
After Each Use:
Every time an SCBA is used, the user inspects it to see if the cylinder needs refilling or replacing with a full one. We clean the components and face pieces, check for any damage or wear, and sanitize them. If the SCBA was used in a contaminated area, we make sure to decontaminate it before using it again.
Monthly Inspection:
Each SCBA assigned to an apparatus gets a monthly inspection. We make sure it’s fully charged, clean, and in good shape. If there’s any minor issue, like cleaning or refilling the cylinder, anyone trained on using our SCBAs can do it.Any Damage? If we find any damage or a unit not working properly during the inspection, we remove it from service and tag it with a description of the problem. We report these defects to the SCBA maintenance team, so they can take care of it.
Annual Checkup:
Every twelve months, all SCBAs get a thorough inspection and servicing by an authorized repair facility. They disassemble and clean the parts, replace worn pieces, and test the SCBA to make sure everything works correctly. A flow test is done to check its function.
